Quick note: New TechEd downloads
There is TechEd in Orlando, and this means, that there are a lot of new announcements. Let’s fill up our download managers with expensive fuel and start.
- New WM 6.1 images (both standard and professional) – absolutely required if you’re programming Windows Mobile
- Managed Extensibility Framework – I blogged about it a little in the past. Really cool approach for adding extensibility features to your applications. Krzysztof explains new features there.
- Windows Live Writer new CTP + new SDK – the best tool to post into your blog.
- New CTP of Microsoft Project Codename “Velocity” – great approach for development applications, using high performance in memory cache. Here the deep explanations in the team blog + quick start and samples.
Silverlight 2.0 beta 2 + Microsoft Expression Blend 2.5 June preview will be available for download very soon. Keep watching. Meanwhile, you can start learn about new TabControl, VisualStateManager, new templating system and cross-domain policy from Tim Heuer’s blog. Also there are some news about event bubbling in beta 2 in Jesse’s blog.

In a recent Vodacom advertisement customers were proudly offered a free Samsung i600 mobile phone, which incidentally included‘ low call rates per second’. There is just one catch, Vodacom did not have this phone.

I bought my current laptop in a mad dash before a flight. Yes, my old one died without warning and I REALLY needed a full computing platform for my business trip.
It was right after Christmas and my local Best Buy had been cleaned out of nearly all of its inventory because of aggressive pricing. I was left with a compromise, the Acer Aspire 5520-5290. If you’ve read about big time problems with the keyboard sensitivity, let me just tell you that the reports are correct. The thing is very touchy and tempermental but I got it for just $700 US with tax.
It came with Vista Home Premium but only 1GB of RAM and 384MB of that is shared with video.
Needless to say, when I loaded Pinnacle Studio on it, everything else stopped. So, I took it back to Best Buy so that the local Geek Squad could install a RAM upgrade to 4GB. Much to my surprise, the fact that the store sold the computer to me had no effect on management’s decision to stock the necessary memory. I had to order it from Crucial!
In the end, it works much better for video editing (although the keyboard remains a POS) and I can’t wait to see what Velocity does for its overall operation!
